Deep
in the woods of the Canadian wilderness, a mother bear and her cub are attacked
by poachers. Mother bear sweeps her baby from danger as she falls to the
hunter’s dart, but the little bear escapes. Injured and frightened, baby bears
pulls herself out of the torrent, and limps toward a house at the end of the
forest. Inside, the Bradley family, returning to Canada after a stay in
California, is settling into their new life in a small town. They are a
handsome family: Greg (Ed Begley, Jr.) has taken a job as editor of the local
newspaper; mother, Sara (Natja Jamaan), is busy organizing the household and
coaxing their daughters into a better humor. The girls, 7-year-old Emily (Kaitlyn Burke) and 14-year-old Melissa (Kimberly Warnat), are both having a difficult time adjusting to their new home,
and school, where the reception has been less than friendly. Emily,
particularly, is feeling lost and lonely. Into her life limps the little bear
and the adventure begins. Emily smuggles the baby bear into her room and talks
a reluctant Melissa into harboring their new friend, “Masha.” Later, the
Bradley family takes Masha and her mother back to the woods, and after a loving
and tearful goodbye, Masha raises her paw in farewell, and follows her mother
into the forest.
