In the galaxy of Hollywood stars, no star was more meteoric than John Wayne. From U.S.C. football star to movie bit player, Marion Morrison never did anything halfway. Plucked for stardom at 22 and renamed John Wayne, his first big movie was a box office flop, relegating him to B-Westerns until his big break in John Ford's classic Western "Stagecoach" (1939) as Ringo Kidd. While other stars went to war, Wayne stormed the beaches of Hollywood, becoming a box office superstar. By the 1950's, he was considered controversial for supporting McCarthyism and, a decade later, the Vietnam War. At the same time, he began successfully producing his own films; even directing "The Alamo" (1960). He remained popular into the 1970's through a succession of Westerns, winning the Oscar for 1969's "True Grit." John Wayne sustained a five-decade-long film career. Even while becoming a symbol of a zealous patriot, he remains a true giant on the American horizon.
